Dementia friends, how can GP practices help?
Dementia is arguably the biggest health crisis facing the UK. There are currently approximately 670,000 people in England who have dementia, with one in three of us over 65 developing the condition, which undoubtedly will me more people visiting their GP who need help.
A great initiative from Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friends has been hitting our screens with their campaigning commercials. So, how can GPs and healthcare professionals help beyond medical advice and treatment?
The campaign is not about volunteering or fundraising although that would also be welcomed, it is about understanding a little more about dementia, not from a medical perspective but a personal one. The little changes you can make to your approach that can help people with the condition feel more at ease when visiting their GP practice, from the way the receptionists greet a patient with dementia through to the healthcare offered by the medical team.
People with dementia want to carry on with their daily life and feel included in their local community and also the decisions related to their condition and care. Dementia friends try to learn a little about what it is like to live with dementia and then turn their understanding into positive action. This could be by helping someone find the right information leaflet or being more patient when someone with dementia is looking to book a repeat prescription or next appointment.
So, could your practice have a dementia friend?
